ISL 2023–24: Mohun Bagan defeats East Bengal 3–1, earning bragging rights in the Kolkata Derby

In the second Kolkata Derby of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023–23, Mohun Bagan Super Giants defeated East Bengal FC 3–1, securing a commanding lead in the points table. The match took place at Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday night.

Early in the game, the Mariners and their commanding front line went on a full-fledged offensive display, hitting the back of the goal three times to drive the Red & Gold Brigade back. Despite Saul Crespo’s incredible goal in the second half of the match, Jason Cummings, Liston Colaco, and Dimitrios Petratos each scored once to prevent the Carles Cuadrat-coached team from winning.

In the game’s twelfth minute, East Bengal FC striker Cleiton Silva was brought down in the area by Mohun Bagan Super Giant goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, giving East Bengal FC the first opportunity to take the lead. Silva took a stride forward at that same moment, but an attentive Kaith blocked his well-aimed shot on his right, causing him to leap with glee and exhale in relief after conceding first in this intense match.

Leading by the talisman Petratos, the Mariners surged ahead with that momentum, absolutely holding a lead for the remainder of the half. In the 27th minute, the Australian and Manvir Singh combined to set up Cummings’ goal. Manvir barely overcame a challenge to set up Petratos for the goal from beyond the 18-yard box. He fired a hard shot that Prabsukhan Singh Gill stopped, and Cummings was there to slot in the rebound before erupting into one of his signature celebrations.

After nine minutes, Petratos was back in the thick of things, scoring with his left foot, bouncing the ball off the crossbar, and laying it off for an unmarked Colaco to score from the far post and double the advantage.

Nandhakumar Sekar’s tackle on Colaco in the first half’s extra time indicated that East Bengal FC seemed to be giving in to the pressure. Unlike Silva, Petratos made no mistake from the spot and easily sent the ball beyond Gill.

In the second half, Crespo gave the Red & Gold Brigade a glimmer of hope when Silva’s long pass found the midfielder. The latter showed perfect decisiveness while in a difficult situation to drill the ball in and cut the lead.

Even though their front line repeatedly teased support and the East Bengal FC goal, Kaith’s fast reactions and the Mariners’ disciplined team maintained the advantage.
